CNS Research

At our clinical research unit in Plymouth, Veeda have established an excellent reputation for conducting complex CNS studies. The addition of our Ahmedabad phase I unit in India provides unrivalled access to patient populations for the rapid and efficient conduct of early phase and POC studies in a range of CNS disorders.

Experience & Expertise

Cognitive testing is one of the tools available in translational medicine in the development of CNS therapeutic agents. Veeda have over 20 years experience in applying a wide range of cognitive and neurological test batteries to Phase I clinical research.

One of the specialities of Veeda’s unit in Plymouth is safety and efficacy measurements of anaesthetic agents. These studies involve a wide range of assessments including EEG technology and assessment of saccadic eye movements

Some examples of some recent studies performed in our unit are:
  • A study examining elderly male and female subjects using Cambridge Cognition (CANTAB): auditory verbal learning test; spatial planning tests; National Adult Reading Test.
  • A large scale trial of age matched elderly subjects classed into normal and with mild cognitive impairment, compared with young normal subjects, simultaneously using the CANTAB and Cognitive Drug Research (CDR) test batteries.
  • An elderly male and female study employing the i3 research Computerized Neuropsychological Test Battery (CNTB), a battery of 11 tests that assessed: motor speed; attention; information processing; episodic memory (immediate and delayed); procedural memory; spatial memory; language; spatial function; executive function.
  • An elderly male and female study using CNTB - VSRT, SRT, CRT VAS, DSST.
  • A healthy young male volunteer study using immediate and delayed word recall, Karolinska sleepiness scale, full and targeted neurological examinations.
  • A healthy male and female study employing CDR: saccadic eye movements, immediate and delayed word recall, digit vigilance, choice reaction time, spatial and numeric working memory, word recognition, tracking and postural stability.
  • A healthy young male study using CogState: Groton maze learning test, one card learning task, detection task, identification task, controlled oral word association test
Veeda’s unit in Ahmedabad, India is associated with the prestigious Gujarat Imaging Centre. The centre offers 14 radiologists of differing specialty, most of whom are western trained. The centre offers the following capabilities:
  • Ultrasound imaging centre allowing all modes of imaging and colour flow visualisation
  • Computed Tomography Multislice CT Scanner ( 64 Slice Philips Brilliance)
  • 3.0 Tesla Phillips X series MRI scanner
    • fMRI Imaging
    • MRI spectroscopy
    • Diffusion MRI
  • GE Medical Gamma Camera providing for a range of scintigraphy and dynamic studies.
  • Sumitomo Clinical Cyclotron for PET – CT
Patient Studies

Unrivalled access to elderly volunteer and patient populations at our Plymouth site has enabled us to conduct studies comparing patients with healthy age matched subjects in a range of studies examining CNS compounds. Veeda currently has a database of around 800 active male and female elderly subjects (aged 65-85 years).

Veeda’s Plymouth unit also has access to specific patient groups through consultants and our local network of general practitioners. The South West of England is home to 11.5% of the UK’s Alzheimer’s population giving Veeda access to more than 65,000 patients with this condition. In the planning of Alzheimer’s studies Veeda works closely with Professor Robin Eastwood FRC Psych , FRCPc, FRCPE, Consultant psychiatrist at the Nuffield Hospital, Plymouth. Prof. Eastwood has published over 190 papers, book chapters and book reviews, and was Editor-in-Chief of the “International Psychogeriatrics” Journal from 1996 – 2003.

Our UK unit has established an excellent GP network which gives us access to around 50,000 patients. This network, together with our links to consultants and hospitals in the region, allows us access to patients with a wide range of conditions including Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis and many others.

The Advantage of India

The prevalence and presentation of psychiatric disorders in India is very similar to that found in the West. The prevalence of major psychiatric disorders in India is in the region of 65 per 1000 people in the population, giving an estimated 75.5 million patients fitting into this category. This places our Ahmedabad clinical unit in an ideal location to run early phase POC studies in this therapeutic area.
